What page is loaded when I go to http://www.your-domain.com?
|
|
Our UNIX http
servers are configured to read index.html as the
default homepage, so people browsing your site
can simply type http://www.yourdomain.com rather
than having to specify a filename, such as http://www.yourdomain.com/homepage.html
It is imperative that you have an index.html
file in each directory of your website unless
you want to make private things public. Directories
without this file allow browsing through your
files, allowing anyone to view files which are
not intended for the public.
|
For our Windows NT Customers:
The default pages that can be loaded when someone
comes to your Web Site are:
- default.htm
- default.html
- default.asp
- index.htm
- index.html
- index.asp
If any of these files exist, they will be automatically
loaded in the order listed above.

What is an appropriate file size for HTML files?
|
|
| When people
visit your home page, and look around they might
be on a slow modem. Downloading heavier pages
with lots of file and graphics might take forever
at that speed, leading to loss of interest. |
Here are some simple fixes to
the problem:
- Split your home page into separate, easy
to load pages.
- Reduce graphic size by shrinking the image.
- Save photographs as .jpg files with 85% compression
ratio.
- Save mainly solid color images with .gif
compression.
- Try reducing the number of colors in your
gif files.

How do I use WS_FTP? |
|
Download
WS_FTP (Windows)
| Step 1 |
Click on <New>
Enter your login info in the appropriate
fields.
• The Profile Name can be anything
you wish to call the site.
• The Home Name/Address is the name
of your Web Site (your-site.com)
• Enter your assigned User ID and
Password. Please note that all of this info
is case-sensitive, and should be entered
exactly as given.
• Check the Save Pwd Box if you want
your password stored by the program. |
| Step 2 |
Click on <Startup>
Tab
• For the Initial Remote Host Directory
type HTML (all capital
letters)
• The Initial Local Directory should
be the complete file path to the directory
on your computer which contains (or will
contain) your
web-related files. • Click on
the <Apply> button. |
| Step 3 |
Make sure you are connected to the Internet
With your site selected, click on the <OK>
button to connect.
Next time you use WS_FTP, proceed directly
to Step 3.
After Cuteftp is logged-in, make sure that
your main page is called index.html for
UNIX users. Double-click a file in the left
window to upload (put) a file up to the
server, and double-click a file in the right
window to download (get) it to your computer.
Next, open up a web browser (eg. Netscape,
Internet Explorer) and verify your site
is working properly. |
|
|
| |
|
Where do I put my files? |
|
| All home pages
must reside in the directory where the ftp in
your account leads to. This directory is created
automatically when we generate your account. The
filename usually ends with .html, but filenames
ending in .htm are acceptable. It’s a good
idea to stick to a simple naming convention to
make things easier, and to maintain the links
on your pages.

How do I check my mails from a browser? |
|
| Checking your
mails from the browser is fairly simple. Here’s
how:
Suppose your website is http://www.abc.com. To
check your email, type in the url http://mail.abc.com:8383
(Please note: the http:// is essential) |
|
| |
|
How do I change my email password ? |
|
| To change your
existing password, log in to your account from
the browser – like
http://mail.mywebsite.com:8383, login with the
username and password you already have, and then
choose the Change password option to set a new
password of your choice.

|
Why am I not able to send or receive messages even
when my settings are correct? |
|
| You have either
exceeded your mailbox storage limit. This means
your mailbox is full, so you need to empty the
mailbox by deleting some old and unwanted mail.
If you still have the same problem with receiving
or sending mail, contact us at webteam@on-lyne.com |
|
| |
|
Why do my outgoing messages keep bouncing back to
my account ? |
|
| There can be
a few reasons for this. The person you are mailing
might have exceeded their mailbox storage limit,
their server might be in downtime, and not responding,
or, possibly, the email address you typed in is
invalid.

What is a domain name? |
|
| A domain name
is like a tag used to identify the location of
websites on the Internet. Here are some domain
names you might already be familiar with:
netnation.com - on-lyne Communications
microsoft.com - Microsoft
ucla.edu - University of California at Los Angeles
|
|
| |
|
What is an IP address? |
|
| Every computer
that logs on to the Internet has a numeric identification
– like
202.71.136.238 -- called an IP-Address. This number
identifies the real world location of
the computer. Since this kind of an addressing
system is difficult to remember, getting a. domain
name eliminates the need to remember the IP address.
|
|
| |
|
What are the components of a domain name? |
|
A domain name
consists of two or more words separated by a period.
The last word (the far right) is called a "-level
domain". Here are some common -level domains
and their use:
·COM
Used for commercial entities. It is the most popular
-level domain. Anyone can register a .com domain.
·NET
Originally used for networking organizations
such as Internet Service Providers and backbone
providers. Today, anyone can register a .net
domain.
·ORG
Designed for miscellaneous organizations, including
non-profit groups. Today, anyone can register
a .org domain.
·EDU
Four-year, accredited colleges and universities.
Country Codes
Other top-level domains include those for countries
(.CA for Canada, .UK for the United Kingdom,
.HK for Hong Kong, etc.), which are based on
the International
Country Codes
Other -level domains include those for countries
(.CA for Canada, .UK for the United Kingdom,
.HK for Hong Kong, etc.), which are based on
the International Standards Organization's 3166
standard for country abbreviations.
To the left of the -level domain is what is
called the "second-level domain."
In on-lyne.com, "on-lyne" represents
a second-level domain within the -level domain
of .com.
It is also possible to have a domain name in
the form of something.on-lyne.com. In this case
the "something" is called a "host"
name or a "sub-domain". It is not
necessary to register a host or sub-domain with
a registry before being able to use it.
|
|
| |
|
What is a DNS? |
|
DNS stands for "Domain Name Server".
It translates domain names into IP addresses
that computers understand. For example, if someone
wants to access on-lyne's website (www.on-lyne.com),
the DNS will translate the domain into the IP
address 202.71.136.238, which will allow the
computer to locate on-lyne's web server.
|
|
| |
|
What is a URL? |
|
It stands for Universal Resource Locator. Some
people refer to it as a web address (although
URL is not limited to the web). An example of
a URL is http://www.on-lyne.com. A URL is a
unique identifier, and no two websites can ever
have the same URL, so it is imperative that
you register your domain name before someone
else snaps it up.
|
|
| |
|
How long does it take to register a domain name? |
|
If the information you provide is correct,
it should take less than 24 hrs to register
your domain name. Please check the “who
is” database at http://www.on-lyne.com/cgi-on-lyne/whois.cgi
to see whether your domain name is available
or already taken.
|
|
| |
|
Once a domain is registered, who "owns"
the domain name? |
|
The registered domain name is the property
of the organization that is on the “who
is” database. We register your domain
name so that it is easy to move the domain name
to your favorite web hosting or ISP company,
if you wish to, in the future.
